The Toniq-R pre-production prototype was designed and built by four final year
Transport Design students at the University of Huddersfield.
These were Angus Fitton, Colin Williams, Paul Phillpot, and Will Baxter who
decided to work together on the first ever final-year group project after Angus Fitton
had shown sketch ideas for a future direction of Westfield cars to Chris Smith
(Managing Director). The team immediately saw the potential advantages of working
as a group to produce the first ever full size concept car by any British University
and the research started straight away.
Initially there were concerns as to how the project would be marked, but the
whole team agreed that a team mark would be the best for all of us. All for
of the members had just returned from their respective placement years designing
sportscars, yachts and trains whilst had Angus worked as a motoring journalist.
With each member having specialist skills in varying areas the formulae was
there for success; Angus Fitton had built up many invaluable contacts, Colin
Williams provided his years of experience in car laminate and fabrication from
TVR, Paul Phillpot provided attention to detail and a clean rendering
style along with Will Baxter’s design creativity and ability to find sponsors.
All aspects of the market research, 2D design, 3D design, prototype
fabrication and marketing were done as a group and discussed fully. If ever
there was a design difference, the team put their justified thoughts to the
vote and a conclusion was then found. An example of this was the spare wheel
which we had included for a long time for practical reasons, but as soon as the idea was
dropped we all agreed the car suited the ‘Lightweight Sportscar’ brief much better.
